| 6 | Blunderbuss | "Git My Dog Drunk" * | [to show madness! "Blunderbuss" is an obscure solo project of a guy I know who used to have a job where his responsibility was to watch YouTube videos all day and report on what was cool; he told me that he spent most of his time picturing his co-workers' heads exploding.]![]() |
| 7 | Thee More Shallows | "Freshman Thesis" | [entering hospital/hospital hallways] |

| 20 | Weezer | "The Good Life [live, acoustic]" | [fantasy montage of Craig; this is from the readily available Good Life OZ EP, I have a better version on my computer but I don't know where it's from and it has weird popping noises] |

Now, how do people feel about abbreviating book titles?
Does it annoy you when people refer to A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius as A.H.W.O.S.G.?
I always wanted to stay away from it, because I figure you're splitting your web searches. I'm lucky to have one book named It's Kind of a Funny Story, I shouldn't be littering the web with cryptic phrases that might or might not be related to it.
But then I searched "IKOAFS" and found this:

That's really amazing. Thank you Billy Galant on MOCpages.com. I'm adding this to the art I've found over the years:

If you have made art related to my book, please please send it!
---- added 10/28/09 ---

So, I'm going to be dipping into "IKOAFS" for It's Kind of a Funny Story from now on. If people object and/or get confused or hit me, I'll stop. It does have the advantage that it's pronounceable, although it doesn't really sound like anything, does it?
The IKOAFS movie is in pre-production, casting and scouting locations as we speak. New things burble up in IMDB frequently, so check the IMDB page. Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Viola Davis and Adrian Martinez are cast so far... Shooting scheduled to begin in 1 month. Thanks to everybody who has been writing or talking about this movie.
And now: soundtrack.

I don't keep blog metrics because I would get neurotic about them, but the most popular post I remember writing here was the one when I wailed on Apple for its sub-human MacBook Air. That was, until the last post: I think we're in triple-digit comments and people keep making suggestions for the movie soundtrack. This had a really unexpected personal benefit for me: I've been discovering wonderful new music all month.
This is the music I have not heard before that I now know:
- Say Anything
- MGMT
- The Felice Brothers
- Elvis Costello
- The Flaming Lips
- Daniel Johnston
- Silversun Pickups
I always wanted to keep music off this blog because I figured it's so specific and idiosyncratic, but it's an important part of my life and if people want to start risking my taste, let's go for it. I opened up a Lala account. Let's see, what's on my mind? I think Flaming Lips Embryonic is great and I always detested them, except of course for "She Don't Use Jelly."
Daniel Johnston's "Fake Records of Rock N Roll" is the best song out right now -- and I've never been one of his mental illness fetishists.
As to the music for the soundtrack, I have made a mix. Here it is. There's one song here that is going to be in the movie -- not gonna say what, let's keep it fun -- then there is one, "Happy Today", that is really special to me, then the rest are songs that were suggested or that I came across over the last month. If they're mp3s, don't just steal the mp3s! LISTEN to them and then buy things of the bands'!
[soundtrack]
Now, putting that together took me way, way more time than I ever intended or imagined. So I'm not going to be refining it or anything... I'm just burning a CD and bringing it to the music supervisor, who supervised the music for (500) Days of Summer! She may have songs 100x better, which would be really exciting. My goal here is to have a classic movie soundtrack.
My backup goal is to have a soundtrack that gets a higher rating from Pitchfork than the New Moon soundtrack. That seems like a worthy goal. We can do that, right?

5.4
Please tell me what you think of the songs for the movie!

Happy-making.
This post has made me super happy. I love listening to new music! I have only listened to the first couple of songs so far, but I am really liking them. They seem like they would fit well, and the Lach song had me laughing out loud. And, I figured out that the kids in the Say Anything video are from Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, which used to be one of my favorite shows, a few years ago. haha.
Oh, and the Lego art is awesome. =]

Re: Happy-making.
People sometimes tell me I should sue that show!!That's really hilarious that they are from "Ned's". I think it's great that the guy in the video isn't a singer.

And I literally screamed a little when I read that there is going to be a movie.
Also.... Flaming Lips are amazing.

movie
I'm a little sad you didn't use the songs I suggested but that's OK I think they're good. Also, I did notice that ImDB says Craig was in a psychiatric ward, but in the book he specifically says that he is in a psychiatric hospital. I just thought that was weird. Also I wanted to know if you get to have any control over anything that has to do with the film.*November 9 2009, 03:13:29 UTC 2 years ago
Re: movie
yeah I'm sorry about the songs! but keep suggesting i'll always listen to new music. i don't like to think in terms of "control" -- I'm part of a process and people respect my opinions :)2 years ago

The Soundtrack
I like the song choices especially mgmt for the bridge scene. The say anthing song made me laugh a little but I like it. I have full faith in this soundtrack knowing that it's being done by the same people who did the soundtrack for 500 Days of Summer. I loved that movie and it's soundtrack especially since and it had 2 songs on it by one of my favorite singers: Regina Spektor.Anonymous

<3 the soundtrack! and not to toot my own horn but...
Im sososososoo happy u looked up MGMT after i suggested it! (though i probably wasn't the only one who did). The Youth is one of my faveorite songs by them and its perfect for the bridge scene. I also really like The Church Channel by Say Anything. And Under Pressure is a classic, and i think its completely awesome that it'll be on the soundtrack as well (i fricken love Queen!!). with all tose phenominal songs on IKOAFS' soundtrack-we will definetly beat New Moon's soundtrack in sales, theres no dobt about it. :)November 21 2009, 12:51:00 UTC 2 years ago

hey, thanks :)November 11 2009, 20:11:17 UTC 2 years ago
another song
Have you heard of the band Belle and Sebastian? Well they have this song called 'Expectations' that I think would fit well if they had a scene in the movie that shows some of Craig's daily routine of waking up, going to school, et cetera. It may not fit, but I think you should consider it.-Thanks, Delilah

Re: another song
Yes, this could be good in the slot that I have Reid Paley "Lucky's Tune" in.Reid Paley "Lucky's Tune"

I don't like it quite as much, but it's a good, mellower option!
